A major challenge in today’s biochemistry is to provide novel enzymes, which extend the range of accessible reactions. Innovative, selective synthetic routes are established, in order to manufacture chemical products, using the available resources more efficiently. To design biocatalysts we develop protein sequence and structure databases and model protein properties by molecular dynamic simulations.
Using protein engineering we improve the biochemical performance of enzymes by mutation, gene synthesis or random libraries. Developing analytical high-throughput systems is another indispensible method applied in our research. For an application in first laboratory processes we supply enzymes as recombinant proteins or develop whole cell catalysts combining several enzymes to unique metabolic pathways.
